Loyalty Trend 2: An Audible Shift

Beyond an email or webpage being read aloud and replies being spoken (yes, that’s in the works), there are several critical audible-related considerations when it comes to inclusive marketing. Namely, these considerations fall under ensuring the integrity and usability of the spoken content and extending accessibility to all audio-visual marketing efforts.

The Quality of the Spoken Word (for Screen Readers/Assistants)

When an email is read aloud, assistants like Siri, Alexa, or Google, rely on the code behind the words. As you can imagine, if the code is messy, the experience is jumbled and a major barrier for those with visual impairments. Here are some considerations to achieve audible inclusivity:

  • Clarity: Prioritize plain language and avoid the use of jargon
  • Semantics: Utilize semantic HTML (ie. correct headings, lists, paragraphs) to ensure the assistant reads the content in logical order and to help the user navigate with ease
  • Readability: Utilize alt text (not just on images) as what will be spoken for the visual experience (ie. prioritize concise messaging to convey the intent of a link as opposed to just describing an image)

The Conversational Voice

While still in the experimental stages, voice-activated email replies could make interactions more conversational and accessible. Brands may soon enable customers to respond using their voice, allowing simple, hands-free commands like “Enroll Me” or “Add Offer” for a seamless user experience.

Your marketing copy should be optimized to sound authentic and natural when spoken aloud and aligning your brand’s voice—an “audio identity” if you will—that jives with the tone delivered by assistants/readers. Ensuring your message sounds like a real conversation, rather than dry and disjointed, is crucial for building trust.
